Time to Talk Day – A Carer’s Perspective

Time to Talk Day – A Carer’s Perspective

As unpaid Carers, we’re used to carrying so much practical tasks, emotions, responsibilities, and often the unspoken worries of the person we support. We check medications, appointments, benefits, meals, and moods… but how often do we pause and check in with ourselves, or allow someone else to check in with us?

Time to Talk Day on 5th February is a gentle reminder that conversations about how we’re feeling matter especially for those of us who spend most of our time supporting others. It’s a chance to stop, breathe, and connect.

Yet many Carers worry about opening up.
“I don’t want to burden anyone.”
“What if I get upset?”
“People won’t understand my situation.”
“I don’t even know where to start.”

And beneath those thoughts is another fear:
What if someone asks how I’m doing… and I don’t know the answer?

The truth is, talking doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t need the “right” words. You don’t need a rehearsed script. Sometimes it’s simply saying, “It’s been a lot lately,” or “I think I need a chat.” Conversations, even small ones, can release pressure we didn’t realise we were holding.

As Carers, we often make space for everyone except ourselves. Time to Talk Day encourages us to take back a little of that space. Maybe it’s a cuppa with a friend, a quick message to someone who “gets it,” or a chat with a support worker or volunteer. What matters is connection.

So on 5th February, give yourself permission to pause.
Check in with someone you trust.
Let them check in with you.
Your wellbeing is just as important as the person you care for, today and every day.

Because talking isn’t just helpful.
For Carers, it can be a lifeline.

Gloucestershire Carers Hub are looking for volunteers who can be befrienders if you have a couple of hours a month and would like to volunteer to talk and be a buddy for us please get in touch
